Reading: Nightly for 20 minutes - Monday - Thursday

In order to help your child organize himself/herself and keep track of his/her homework we will be using a HOMEWORK folder. This folder needs to be brought to school EVERY DAY. One pocket will be for papers that need to come back to school and the other pocket is for papers that can be kept at home. The folder will also contain his/her reading log.

Your child will be asked to read a minimum of 4 days per week for 20 minutes each time. Research shows that children who read frequently perform better in all subject areas and become life-long learners. Thus it is important to make your child's reading homework a top priority. You can help your child by setting aside a certain time of the day and place for reading. This may be prior to bed, before school, after school, on the bus, after dinner or whatever time works best for both of you. You may also choose to read with or to your child depending on your child's needs. It is also vital for your child to be reading books that are at their level, not too hard or too easy. Most important, make reading a special and fun time. When your child has finished their reading please record the name of the book (or abbreviate) and initial the reading log/calendar. Students will be required to turn this calendar in Tuesday-Friday mornings as part of their homework. Prizes will also be awarded to students who go beyond the minimum requirements.

Your child may also have math or writing homework. However, this homework will only be sent home if the assignment helps your child meet grade level expectations AND if they need the practice or enrichment. Students will be asked to put this homework in their homework folder so that it is easy for both parents and children to keep track of. If you or your child is unclear about the assignment or your child is struggling (after trying with and without help) please write me a note about what part was unclear or challenging and I will work with your child on it at school. My goal for math and writing homework is NOT to create extra work or stress but rather enhance learning.

The last type of homework you will see will be spelling. However, unlike traditional spelling programs our new spelling program will not have weekly spelling lists.
Rather, students will receive a list of words that they are to master. This means that words may reappear on a spelling test a few weeks later. Furthermore, spelling tests will be in a "cloze" format. This means that the words are inserted into a story format and students write the words in the blanks as I read the story out loud (pausing as needed). Along with the word list, students will be provided ideas for practicing these words. Your child may need to practice all of the words or just a few depending on which words they can already spell. More information will be provided as word lists come home.
